College Care Packages for Michigan Students: Timing, Addresses
· Updated

At the University of Michigan, fall classes end on Friday, Dec. 11, 2026. Two study days follow, then exams run Monday, Dec. 14, through Friday, Dec. 18, with one more exam day on Monday, Dec. 21, according to the registrar's academic calendar. At Wayne State, the last day of classes is Tuesday, Dec. 15, Dec. 16 is a study day with no exams allowed, and finals run Dec. 17 through Dec. 23.
Those dates are the whole game for a finals week care package. A box that shows up the week before exams gets opened at a desk covered in notes. A box that shows up after the last exam sits in a mailroom while its owner is on I-94 heading home. Here is how to time it, how to address it so it actually reaches the student, and what to put inside, for kids at Michigan schools and for Detroit kids who went away.
Aim for the last week of classes
The target window is the stretch between the last week of classes and the first exam. At U-M that's roughly Dec. 7 through the study weekend of Dec. 12 and 13. At Wayne State it runs up to the Dec. 16 study day. For Michigan State and other schools, look up the fall calendar on the registrar's site. Exam schedules differ by school, and a few days matter here.
Mid-semester boxes are worth sending too. But if you're sending one box this term, finals is the one.
Build in a few extra days. Campus mail adds a step that home delivery doesn't. For our boxes, current shipping timing is in the shipping section of our site.
Address it the way the school asks
Every campus has its own address format, and a package with a missing room number or the wrong name can bounce. Use the student's name as it appears on their school ID, not a nickname.
University of Michigan. University Housing asks for the student's name, then the building and room number, then the house, then the street address, then Ann Arbor, MI and the ZIP code. Some halls, including Couzens, Munger, North Quad and Stockwell, have no houses, so that line is skipped. Each hall has its own street address and ZIP+4. East Quadrangle, for example, is 701 East University Avenue, 48109-1245. The full list is on the University Housing mailing address page. In traditional residence halls, packages are held at the community center and the student gets an email when one arrives.
Michigan State. MSU's Live On site asks for the name on the student's MSU ID card, the hall name and room number, the hall's street address, then East Lansing, MI 48825. Apartments at 1855 Place and University Village use the building address, the apartment number and ZIP code 48823. Packages go to the service center in the student's hall, and staff send an email and text when one is ready. Two details matter for a care package: MSU holds unclaimed packages for seven days before returning them to the sender, and its service centers have no refrigeration, so perishable items can only be held for a short time.
Wayne State. Each building has its own address, listed on the Housing and Residential Life site. Ghafari Hall, for example, is 695 Williams Mall, Detroit, MI 48202, and the Towers Residential Suites are at 655 W. Kirby. How you ship changes how it arrives. According to Wayne State, packages from FedEx, DHL and other private carriers go straight to the building, while packages sent through the Postal Service go to the university's mail processing center first and arrive with other campus mail. Students get a slip in their mailbox and pick up the package at the front desk with a photo ID.
For a school out of state, search the school's name plus "housing mail" and use the format on the university's own page. Then text the student that a box is on the way, with the tracking number. A seven-day hold goes fast during finals.
Pack for a dorm, not a kitchen
Unless you know your student has a kitchen, pack as if they don't. The best finals box is food that opens with two hands and needs nothing else: chips, packaged sweets, canned pop, nuts.
Skip anything that needs refrigeration. Even if it ships cold, it may sit in a mailroom with no fridge until the student picks it up.
Non-food things that earn their space in a finals box: foam earplugs, a long phone charging cable, a pack of index cards, good pens, lip balm, cough drops, a fresh toothbrush. None of it is exciting. All of it gets used during exam week.
Our 313 Box, $79, is built for this kind of room. It has Better Made chips, Faygo Rock & Rye, Vernors for a Boston Cooler, Sanders hot fudge, Germack cherry and praline nuts from Eastern Market and a skyline magnet that will end up on a mini-fridge. Nothing in it needs a kitchen, though the hot fudge is better warmed.
For a student with an apartment and a stove, a build-your-own box, from $89, can be dinner: canned Detroit coney sauce with our recipe card, a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix, Sanders hot fudge, Vernors, Faygo Rock & Rye and Better Made chips. It needs a pot, an oven and a pack of hot dogs from the nearest grocery store, so save it for the junior in an off-campus place, not the freshman in a double.
Detroit kids at schools out of state
For a Detroit kid at school in Chicago, Columbus or Atlanta, the box does a second job. Along with fuel for finals, it brings home in a form they can share with a roommate who has never heard of a Boston Cooler.
That's where Michigan brands carry the weight: Vernors, Faygo, Better Made, Sanders. Put a note in explaining one of them. A Boston Cooler is Vernors and vanilla ice cream, and a pint of vanilla plus a can of Vernors makes a decent study break in a dorm lounge. Our guide to gifts for someone who moved away from Detroit has more ideas in the same vein.
One limit for students in Canada: The Michigan Kitchen Box, and any custom box with the coney sauce kit or Jiffy, ships to US addresses only. Canada doesn't allow the coney sauce, which contains meat, to come in by mail. Our other boxes do ship to Canada.
Put something in writing
Every one of our boxes comes with a handwritten card, and the message is the part a student is most likely to keep. Make it short and specific. Mention the exam they're worried about by name. Tell them the dog misses them. Remind them when you'll pick them up, or when their flight lands.
Then send a text the day it ships. At MSU, a box has seven days at the service center before it goes back. During finals week, that clock runs faster than anyone expects.
